We didn't write this song to be cryptic. We wrote it because we had something to say and we'd been holding it in for too long. Here's what's really going on underneath the coughs.
"Let me clear my throat"
Yeah, it's literally a throat clearing. But it's also not. Clearing your throat chakra — in spiritual practice, means removing the blocks that stop you from speaking your truth. That's the real translation. Let me remove what's been keeping me quiet. Let me get ready to actually speak.
The coughing throughout the song? That's the clearing in real time. It's messy. It's uncomfortable. It's not pretty. But it's necessary. By the end of the song, when we take that final deep breath in and exhale? That's the other side of it. Clean. Open. Ready.
"We been cookin' for a minute"
This one is straightforward, we've been working. Quietly. Consistently. Putting in the time even when no one was watching. The music didn't just appear. It was built.
"Shaking off the doubt and second-guessing that come with it"
Because the doubt is real. Anyone who creates knows this. You question whether it's good enough, whether it's the right time, whether you're ready. We're naming it because pretending it doesn't exist isn't honest.
"Letting go of frenemies before we start winnin' / They sabotage and grinnin'"
This one hits different when you've actually been there. People who smile in your face and work against you from behind it. We had to make peace with that and let those people go before we could move forward with any kind of clarity.
"The Neteru and Shepsu gonna smile down"
This line matters a lot to us. Neteru is an ancient Egyptian word referring to the many divine faculties and deities that together make up one God. Shepsu are enlightened ancestors. We're saying: the God in all of His/Her/Their forms, and the ancestors who came before us and made it through, they're watching, and they're proud.
That's not just a lyric. It's our foundation.
"Ain't no way we bouta bow out"
Short. Direct. Done.
The Ending
At the very end of the song, after all the coughing and grunting and wheezing, we breathe in deeply and exhale. That moment is intentional. It's the turning point. The recovery. The arrival.
Lungs full. Finally.
