As I entered the Perry White Design Studio in Downtown Los Angeles, CA, I immediately felt at home. Perry, tall, majestic and lean, warmly welcomed me with open arms. The Perry White Design Studios is any designers dream. The workspace is an artistic display of what’s going on in Perry’s mind, from inspiration to the finished product. Fabric swatches pinned to vision and mood boards hang above rows of sewing machines and irons. The room is centered with a large work table that is dressed and also works as a storage space for rolls upon rolls of fabric. Natural light, in the peak of day and sunset, dresses the room and adds to the warmth. Next to the mannequins dressed in his designs are racks of original pieces from multiple collection
Perry’s designs are featured in this month’s September Issue of Essence Magazine. I was blessed enough and excited to get an up close and personal look at the items featured and have Perry talk to me about the inspiration behind his creations. This September Issue of Essence Magazine graces supermodel Naomi Campbell on the cover. The segment featuring Perry's designs is dedicated toward strong black women. Essence partnered with Nike and LeBron James to create an empowering movement for Women- The Strongest. An ode to 16 of the strongest female influences he knows; celebrating their courage, determination, loyalty and dignity. In the past, Perry has had the pleasure of working with powerful women such as Queen Latifah, Macy Grey and Nicole Murphy to name a few.Â
What I loved the most about Perry’s designs were that no matter the specific collection, the pieces were created to intermix within one another, just like we regularly do with life. Featured items in this month’s Essence Magazine were specially selected from Perry’s Unapologetically Sexy and Lust for Latex Collections. In my exclusive viewing, model Jessica Hearns walked in form fitting shorts sets and sweatsuits, bold in metallic hot pinks, blues and silver. Each outfit Jessica Hearns came out in, caused me to fall in love a little bit more. My favorite was the black latex mini dress. As a fan of little black dresses, I enjoyed the versatility of this piece.Â
Dressed up or down it fit well and was definitely a show stopper. It was refreshing and inspiring to talk to Perry and hear him speak so energetically about his designs and inspirations. For me, he’s created the new standard. If anyone is going to create anything, they need to match his enthusiasm about their projects.
I left the Design Studio inspired and anxious to wear Perry White. Go and get this Month’s September Issue of Essence Magazine! I know I’ll have mine!
